Fishing/Activities:
A 2 hectare dam is well stocked with rainbow trout; an adjacent deep-water quarry is stocked with rainbow trout, black bass and carp. A further 5ha dam is stocked with rainbow trout, black bass, and that latest of fly fishing fun, barbel. Catch and release is encouraged, only fly-fishing methods and equipment are permitted and each cottage has a bag limit charged per kilogram for take-home catch. Ficksburg, the home of the Cherry Festival, is an easy 20 minute drive. The Retreat, on 14 kms of gravel road, is an easy 3½-hour drive from Johannesburg and 1¾-hour drive from Bloemfontein. Birding is excellent, with those Free State “specials” chats and larks in abundance. Blue and white quilled korhaan are resident, secretary birds a frequent sighting. Large flocks of water fowl, waders and comical guinea fowl are seen daily on dams and in the fields, and blue crane a rare and stunning sight. The Retreat has received a Birder friendly Establishment status from Birdlife South Africa.
